Bordeaux

Together with only a handful of other regions, like Champagne or the Napa Valley, Bordeaux is one of the great winemaking centres of the world. Located in the southwest of France, not far from the Bay of Biscay, Bordeaux offers more vineyards—upwards of 100,000—than a single visitor could possibly attempt to sample, but even to scratch the surface is to delve into a rich vinicultural tradition that is unrivalled in its particular style. The city of Bordeaux, spread along the Garonne River, has been the region’s wine capital for decades, and the riches accrued from this past are amply displayed across the ornate buildings of an area known as the Golden Triangle. Today when you travel to Bordeaux, you’ll find a revitalized village, charming 18th-century buildings, a pedestrian-friendly city centre, and a thriving waterfront area with chic boutiques and cafés. Beyond the city limits, there’s also world-class art, dozens of historical châteaux, several listed natural sites, outstanding local food producers and a plethora of cultural sites.
